How we work
Made slowly, and by someone
We are a small workshop, not a factory. That decides most of what follows — and it is worth being precise about what it does and does not mean.
Made by hand, not by machine
Every piece we sell is block-printed, embroidered or woven by a person. There is no production line here and no machine doing the making — which is why two pieces of the same design are never identical, and why we tell you that before you buy rather than after.
Small batches, and made to order
We make in small runs, and a good part of the catalogue is begun only once someone has ordered it. That is slower for you and harder for us to plan — and it is the single biggest thing we do that avoids waste, because nothing is produced on the chance that it sells.
It is also why a piece occasionally sells out rather than being restocked overnight. We would rather run out than make a hundred of something nobody asked for.
The people, by name
Every piece is attributed to the person who made it, with where they work and how long they have practised the craft. A maker who can be named is a maker who can be paid properly and asked about — and it is the part of this we are most willing to be held to.
What we are not claiming
We have not measured our carbon footprint, we do not have organic or fair-trade certification, and we are not going to publish a number for water saved or plastic avoided. We do not have those figures, and inventing them would undo the point of the rest of this page.
What we can tell you is who made a piece, where, from what, and that nothing was made before someone wanted it. When there is more we can say honestly, it will appear here.
